The Direct View LED (or DV LED) digital display market has increased dramatically in recent years, and it’s not expected to stop any time soon. So why are more people turning to DV LED Screens instead of the more standard LCD Digital Screens? What is causing this growth and what does the future look like for this DV LED display technology?
A distinct advantage of Direct View LED over LCD is that it can be made much larger without having any breaks or joins. Thanks to its modular design, ultra large bespoke LED digital displays can be achieved. In fact, DV LED displays can be as small as 0.5m square and as big as you like – the only limit is your imagination! Moreover, with modular DV LED panels you can create custom aspect ratios, shapes and even curved displays.
Another benefit of DV LED digital screens is that it’s more robust and reliable in comparison to LCD video walls which are quite fragile to install. DV LED displays also have a bezel-free design, giving bigger impact and making it an increasingly popular choice in place of LCD video walls.
In terms of longevity, DV LEDs have a lifecycle of 70,000-100,000 hours while LCD panels offer up to 60,000 hours. Therefore, over time DV LED digital screens would maintain image quality better than LCD screens over their lifetime.
However, in contrast, the main disadvantages of DV LED has been that it is relatively expensive and it also has generally lower resolution than LCD digital signage.
Despite these drawbacks, sales of DV LED are growing because, firstly, improvements in manufacturing processes means products are becoming more efficient to build and, therefore, costs of DV LED are coming down.
On top of this, advances in technology means pixel pitch is decreasing and resolution is going up. As a result, DV LED displays can viewed at closer distances and are able to be used in areas not previously possible, such as shop windows, reception areas and board rooms.
Gradually, DV LED is joining a market that was once dominated by LCD screens. Therefore, we think the future is looking very bright for DV LED screens.
